Opening remark on opening ceremony

Prof. Rong Zeng, chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University. In 2012, he was awarded the IET Fellow. In 2013, he won the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund. In 2016, he was awarded the distinguished professor of the Changjiang Scholar by the Ministry of Education. He has long been engaged in the fundamental and key technologies research in the field of the advanced power transmission technology, and has made some achievements in such fields as the optoelectronic integrated electric-field sensor for intensive transient EMF measurement, the lightning physics, lightning protection and grounding on power system, electromagnetic transient simulation, DC power transmission and distribution, etc.

Prof. Farhad Rachidi, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology

Report title:Electromagnetic Time Reversal: From Theory to Applications in Power Systems

Prof. Farhad Rachidi received the M.S. degree in electrical engineering and the Ph.D. degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1986 and 1991, respectively. He was with the Power Systems Laboratory, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, until 1996. In 1997, he joined the Lightning Research Laboratory, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada. From 1998 to 1999, he was with Montena EMC, Rossens, Switzerland. He is currently a Titular Professor and the Head of the EMC Laboratory with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland. He has authored or co-authored over 180 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals and over 380 papers presented at international conferences.
Dr. Rachidi is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the IEEE Trans. on Electromagnetic Compatibility and the President of the Swiss National Committee of the International Union of Radio Science. He has received numerous awards including the 2005 IEEE EMC Technical Achievement Award, the 2005 CIGRE Technical Committee Award, the 2006 Blondel Medal from the French Association of Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Information Technology and Communication (SEE), the 2016 Berger Award from the International Conference on Lightning Protection, the 2016 Best Paper Award of the IEEE Transactions on EMC, and the 2017 Motohisa Kanda Award for the most cited paper of the IEEE Transactions on EMC. In 2014, he was conferred the title of Honorary Professor of the Xi’an Jiaotong University in China. He served as the Vice-Chair of the European COST Action on the Physics of Lightning Flash and its Effects from 2005 to 2009, the Chairman of the 2008 European Electromagnetics International Symposium, the President of the International Conference on Lightning Protection from 2008 to 2014, the Editor-in-Chief of the Open Atmospheric Science Journal (2010-2012) and the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Trans. on Electromagnetic Compatibility from 2013 to 2015. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and of the SUMMA Foundation, and a member of the Swiss Academy of Sciences.



Dr. Guangfu Tang, Globe Energy Interconnection Research Institute, SGCC

Report Title: Research on Key Technology and Equipment for 500kV DC Grid

Dr. Tang received the B.Eng. degree in electrical engineering from Xi’an Jiao Tong University, Shanxi, P.R. China, in 1990, and the M. Eng. degree and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Institute of Plasma Physics, The Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei, China, in 1993 and 1996 respectively. During 1996-1998, he had a postdoctoral position with China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI), Beijing, China. In 1998, he joined the CEPRI, where his research fields focus on power electronics application in power system, and including flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS), high voltage and ultra-high voltage in DC (HVDC/UHVDC) transmission system, VSC HVDC transmission system, and DC grid. In 2012, he joined the State Grid Smart Grid Research Institute, and now he is a vice president of Globe Energy Interconnection Research Institute, Beijing, China. Dr. Tang was a regular member before of CIGRE SC B4 committee. He is a member of CIGRESC B4 AG4. And he was the Convenor of CIGRE SC B4 Working Group B4-48. He also was a member of IEC SC22F WG25 and MT22. Now, he sits on a member of the IEEE PES Narain Hingorani FACTS and Custom Power Award Committee. In 2017, he was become a member of Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.



Prof. Licheng LI, China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd., China

Report Title: Wudongde three terminal DC project

Mr. LI Licheng, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was born in Yan Cheng City, Jiang Su Province on July 8, 1941. He graduated from Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University in 1967 and majored in High Voltage Technology. He was elected to be the Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2007. He is an expert in energy field, devoted to the study of energy technological revolution, energy safety and security, and energy sustainability. Besides, he is an expert of power grid engineering and HVDC Transmission Technology.



Dr. Ram Adapa, HVDC & Power Electronics, EPRI, Palo Alto, CA, USA

Report Title: Role of HVDC and FACTS in Future Smart Electric Grid

Dr. Ram Adapa is a Technical Executive in the Power Delivery and Utilization Sector at EPRI. His research activities focus on High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), Custom Power, and Fault Current Limiters.  
Dr. Adapa joined EPRI in 1989 as a Project Manager in the Power System Planning and Operations program. Later he became Product Line Leader for Transmission, Substations, and Grid Operations where he developed the research portfolio and business execution plans for the Grid Operations and Planning areas. Some of the tools in this portfolio included market restructuring, transmission pricing, ancillary services, and security tools to maintain the reliability of the grid.
Before joining EPRI, Dr. Adapa worked at McGraw-Edison Power Systems (presently known as Eaton’s Cooper Power Systems) as a Staff Engineer in the Systems Engineering Department. 
Dr. Adapa received a BS degree in electrical engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, India, an MS degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, and a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
Dr. Adapa is an IEEE Fellow and has been honored several times by IEEE for his outstanding contributions to the profession. He received the 2016 IEEE PES Nari Hingorani Custom Power Award. He has authored or coauthored more than 125 technical papers and is an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. He is an individual member of CIGRE and a Registered Professional Engineer.


Emeritus Professor Boon Teck Ooi, McGill University, Canada

Report Title: MMC Coming of Age?

Academic qualifications: B.Eng. Hon (first class), University of Adelaide (Australia), M.Eng. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), PhD. from McGill University (Canada).
His career was in teaching in McGill University, where he is now Emeritus Professor. Presently, he spends the winters as Visiting Professor of Nanyang University of Technology ( Singapore), University of Malaya ( Malaysia) and University Tunku Abdul Rahman (Malaysia). Prof. Ooi is Life Fellow of IEEE.  He has published more than 140 journals in IEEE Transactions and IET Proceedings. His publications have received more than 9000 citations with h-index of 49 (Google scholar). Over 5 decades, Prof Ooi’s pioneered research on: [1] electric machines (linear induction motor, magnetic levitation of trains by superconducting magnets); [2] long distance transmission of electric power (overcoming transient stability limit by series capacitor compensation or shunt capacitor compensation, and tackling problems of sub synchronous resonance (SSR) and torsional instability); [3] Voltage-Source Converter (VSC): (point-to-point and multi-terminal HVDC, flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS)-STATCOMS, SSSC, UPFC, modular multilevel converter (MMC); [4] Renewable Energy technologies (doubly-fed induction generator DFIG, impact of wind power on ac grid, mitigation of stochasticity of wind).


  Prof. Christian M. Franck, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, Switzerland


Report Title: In search of next generation gases for high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear

Christian M. Franck was appointed Associate Professor of High Voltage Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich in June 2015 (Assistant Professor from Jan 2010 – May 2015).
He studied physics at the Universities of Bonn (Germany), Edinburgh (Scotland), and Kiel (Germany) where he graduated 1999 with a diploma. Afterwards he worked at the Max-Planck-Institute for Plasma Physics in Greifswald (Germany) in the area of electromagnetic wave propagation in magnetized plasmas, receiving his Ph.D. in experimental physics in 2003. Then he worked at the ABB Research Center in Baden (Switzerland) in the area of current interruption, limitation and high voltage insulation. From 2005 on he headed the group for high voltage systems and gas circuit breakers. In January 2010 he joined ETH Zurich as Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in June 2015. He is married and has three children.
His current research and teaching is in the area of “technologies for future electric energy transmission systems” with focus in the areas of High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission technology and High-Voltage Gaseous Insulation Systems.



Prof. Ramon Blasco-Gimenez, Technical University of Valencia, Spain


Report Title: Integration of Large Wind Farms into HVDC grids

Prof. Ramon Blasco-Gimenez obtained his BEng. degree from the Technical University of Valencia, Spain, in 1992, and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Nottingham, U.K., in 1996.
From 1992 to 1995, he was a Research Assistant in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Nottingham. He is currently Professor of Control Engineering at the Dept. of Systems Engineering and Control of the Technical University of Valencia.
He has been a consultant to main Spanish utilities on integration of wind farms in weak grids and to wind farm operators on risk based operation and maintenance of off-shore wind farms. His research interests include wind turbine control, HVDC systems, off-shore wind farms and grid integration of renewable energy, including pioneering work on the use of diode rectifiers for the HVDC connection of off-shore power plants. He has been involved in more than 30 national and international research projects on the previous topics.
Prof. Blasco-Gimenez has published more than 150 research papers and has been a co-recipient of the 2005 IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics Best Paper Award. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, member of the Electrimacs Committee, Chartered Engineer (U.K.), member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), guest researcher of the Solar Energy Research Centre SERC-Chile and past chair of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Renewable Energy Technical Committee.


Prof. Dongil Lee, Seoul National University, Korea

Pro. Dongil Lee, Research Fellow of Electric Power Research Institute at Seoul National University, Secretary General of KNC(The Korean National Committee of CIGRE) since 2017, and President of Korea Overhead Transmission Technology Society since 2014. He received Ph.D from Hanyang University(1996), KOREA in Electrical Engineering, worked as vice president and head of Transmission & Distribution Lab of KEPRI(Korea Electric Power Corporation Research Institute) during 2012 – 2017, and vice president of KIEE(The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers) during 2015-2016.His research field is Electric Environmental study of HVAC & HVDC with upgrading technology developing of KOREA 765kV Power System for 30 years which was selected one of 60 outstanding research results for Korea Government 60 years history. He received Technical Award on 2010 and Distinguished Member Award on 2012 from CIGRE, and Technology Transfer Award from ERPI of USA on 2008 with more than 180 technical papers and 40 patents etc. His 765kV Electric Environmental Factor Measurement research result of transmission line was selected IEC standard on 2008.
